WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The United States has deployed a dozen F-15C Eagle tactical fighter jets in Europe to support NATO missions in the region, the US European Command (EUCOM) announced in a release on Wednesday.

"Twelve US Air Force F-15Cs arrived in Europe as part of the next Theater Security Package (TSP) in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve," the release said. "Approximately 250 airmen and support equipment deployed from the 131st Fighter Squadron, Barnes Air National Guard Base, Mass[achusetts] and the 194th Fighter Squadron, Fresno Air National Guard Base, Calif[ornia]."

EUCOM explained the aircraft will take part in training activities that include support for the NATO air surveillance mission in Iceland, according to the release.

Moreover, the airmen will conduct training at the Leeuwarden Air Base in the Netherlands, and will forward deploy to other locations in European NATO and partner nations.

"Units will conduct training alongside our NATO allies and partners to strengthen interoperability and to demonstrate US commitment to a Europe that is whole, free, at peace, secure and prosperous," the release added.

Operation Atlantic Resolve is the US military commitment to collective security with NATO and Eastern European countries against Russia, according to the US Department of Defense.

The operation began in 2014, which included Poland and the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, but was expanded last February to include Romania and Bulgaria.

Moscow has repeatedly warned the United States and NATO that the military buildup on Russia’s borders is provocative and can harm regional and global stability.
