WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US military is specifically targeting Al Qaeda cells in Syria that are planning terrorist attacks against the United States and Europe, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters on Thursday.
"We have taken several strikes here recently against the larger, old-fashioned terrorist outfits, al-Qaeda, Khorasan Group… who we know have one main goal and that’s to plan attacks in the West," Warren stated when asked to elaborate on US recent strikes against the al-Qaeda cell in Syria.
Although many of these, including the Daesh foreign fighter network, do not always work together, they are part of the same disease that aims to "export terror" to the West, he added.
The Islamic State, also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh, is a terrorist organization prohibited in many countries around the world, including the United States and Russia.
