The Prime Minister emphasized that he would like to see CSIR oriented towards making the life of the common man better, and providing technological solutions to the problems of the poor and downtrodden sections of society, a PMO statement said on Thursday.

Mentioning key areas where CSIR scientists could take the lead in providing breakthroughs, the Premier spoke of diseases like sickle cell anaemia, which is prevalent among the tribal people, defense equipment manufacturing, life-saving equipment for soldiers, waste management and innovations related to solar energy and the agriculture sector, a statement said.

Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the CSIR society in New Delhi on Wednesday. The Prime Minister was given an overview of the work done by CSIR in addressing national challenges as a major Indian innovator.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is the nation-wide research network of laboratories which spans India. Its programs address specific needs and demands which Indian society faces. It is mainly funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, yet operates as an autonomous organization.
