MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with new FIFA President Gianni Infantino later on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"FIFA President Infantino is in Russia on an inspection visit. Today, the [Russian] president will meet him in the Kremlin for a meeting that will be attended by Minister [of Sport Vitaly] Mutko," Peskov said, adding the upcoming FIFA 2018 World Cup would be on the agenda.
This is Infantino’s first trip to Russia as the head of the world football’s governing body since his election in February.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held from June 14 to July 15 in 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi and Volgograd.
