MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia is planning to adopt in 2016 the ecological security strategy until 2025, Secretary of Russia's Security Council Nikolai Patrushev said Thursday.
"The strategy is expected to be adopted as early as this year. The work on the draft is being monitored by the Security Council," Patrushev told reporters in Moscow.
"The draft document envisions introduction of the best existing technologies at plants that pollute the environment the most. As a result, we are planning to reduce significantly the air pollution…as well as the volume of industrial and consumption waste," Patrushev said.
"At this point, Russia has accumulated over 35 billion tonnes of solid waste, including about 124 million tonnes of hazardous waste, which poses a serious threat to the environment and the population," Patrushev added.
