MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Nine people were killed and over 12,000 were evacuated in Uruguay in the past week amid floods caused by heavy rainstorms and a tornado, El Nacional reports.
Most of the victims were killed by a tornado that swept through the suburbs of Dolores, a city in Uruguay’s western Soriano Department, at the end of last week.
Uruguay's Meteorological Institute (INUMET) has downgraded the orange alert to yellow in some areas of the country, saying it does not expect any more tornadoes in the coming days.
On Saturday, a special cabinet meeting will be held to discuss particular measures to help Uruguay residents who have lost their homes amid harsh weather conditions.
