US Primaries: New Steam From New York

Subscribe
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton scored major wins in the New York primaries, ending a thrilling period of setbacks for them and aiding their undisputed reemergence as the frontrunners in the presidential race.

In an article titled “Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s New York Wins: A Preview of the General Election?”, written by John Cassidy and carried by The New Yorker, the journalist writes that:

“Trump and Clinton both had ample reason to celebrate. Both were heavily favored to win in New York, but after a string of defeats in other states, they needed decisive victories in their own backyards.”

He also said that “It wasn’t just Trump and Clinton’s handsome victories that brought a possible general-election showdown between the two into view, although, clearly, that was part of it”, continuing to explain that “practically speaking, it is now hard to see how either Cruz or Sanders could get enough delegates to win. Their hopes rest on turning things around at the conventions.”

In what might be his most poignant observation, Cassidy forecasts that “Should Clinton and Trump emerge victorious, the election will be a New York affair. And if you look at the breakdown of the votes on Tuesday, the state’s primaries were a microcosm of what we could see in November.”

To discuss this in more detail we were joined by Dmitry Polikanov, a member of the board at the PIR Center, a Moscow-based think tank (studio guest); Edward Lozansky, president of the American University in Moscow; and Eric Shiraev, professor at the George Mason University and prominent author.
