When Size Matters: MidEast’s Largest Metro Station Opens in Tehran
11:42 GMT 27.04.2016 (Updated: 13:21 GMT 27.04.2016) The largest metro station in the Middle East, Shahr-e Aftab (Sun City), has been unveiled in Tehran during a grand ceremony, Real Iran news portal reported.
The new station will link Tehran’s Shahr-e Aftab Exhibition Complex to the city’s subway system.
The 25,000-square-meter station, which is three times bigger than the capital’s other metro stations, will facilitate travel to the Shahr-e-Aftab International Exhibition Complex that will host this year’s edition of the Tehran International Book Fair (May 5-15).
Built over an area of 138 hectares, the Shahr-e-Aftab exhibition complex it is the second largest in Asia and the third in the world after similar complexes in Germany and China. It is located on the Tehran-Qom highway, close to Imam Khomeini International Airport.
Before completion of the Sun City metro station, Tajrish station with an area of 15,000 square meters was registered as the Middle East’s largest metro station.
The newly-inaugurated metro station is styled after the Iranian-Islamic architecture of the Chehel Sotoun pavilion in Isfahan, also known as the Palace of Forty Columns.
