MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Daily Star newspaper’s Sunday report, Daesh militants have been flying to the region attempting to recruit young men there. Some 100 people from Trinidad and Tobago have already travelled to Syria to fight for the group.
The numbers of radicalized Europeans who travel to Iraq and Syria has fallen in recent times, as security has been strengthened.
In January, US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Commander Gen. John Kelly warned that the number of extremists in the Caribbean has been on the rise in the past year.
Daesh has been designated a terrorist group and is outlawed in the United States, Russia and numerous other countries around the world.
In February, US National Intelligence Director James Clapper estimated that more than 36,000 foreign fighters from 120 countries have joined the Daesh in Syria and Iraq since 2012. Of those, about 6,600 Islamic volunteers came from western countries.
