BAKU (Sputnik) — An "Immortal Regiment" patriotic initiative honoring victory over Nazism in World War II kicked off in the Russian Information and Cultural Center (RICC) in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, the Association of Russian Youth of Azerbaijan (ATYA) said Saturday.
"The action was jointly organized by the Association of Russian Youth of Azerbaijan and the Union of Cossacks of Azerbaijan. The first stage of the event is opening of a gallery. Everyone can add photos of their relatives, participants of the Great Patriotic War, to this gallery to pass on the memory to the succeeding generations," the association said in a statement.
The "Immortal Regiment" campaign commemorates WWII soldiers in marches held across Russia and other countries on May 9, celebrated as Victory Day in Russia and former Soviet republics. During the marches, people carry photographs of their ancestors who participated in the war.
This year, commemorative marches are planned in the United States, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and many other countries.
