The inhabitants of the arid regions of China may soon receive fresh water from Russia. The idea was pitched by Russia’s Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev during a meeting with his Chinese colleague Han Changfu.

Water from Russia’s Altai region in western Siberia would be delivered to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China via Kazakhstan.

“We will hold consultations with our colleagues from Kazakhstan on the issue shortly,” Tkachev told reporters after the meeting.

Alexander Tkachev proposed to invite experts from Russia and China to discuss the details of the transfer. About 70 million cubic meters of water may be sent to the Chinese region yearly.

Russia Hopes to Relieve Parched China With Water From Altai
The Russian Minister recalled that in December 2015, the two countries signed protocols on phytosanitary requirements for the supply from Russia to China of five species of grain crops: rice, corn, canola, soybeans, and wheat.

He said that bilateral talks on the matter were scheduled to start shortly.

He also held out hope for an early lifting of a Chinese ban on the import of Russian meat.

“We hope that the Chinese side will soon remove barriers preventing the export of red meat and poultry from Russia to China,” Tkachev added.

Apart from agriculture Russia and China also collaborate in the fields of space exploration and technology protection. Chinese companies are also mulling a number of investment projects in Crimea.
