CAIRO (Sputnik) – Eric Lang was beaten to death by fellow inmates on September 13, 2013, after a week spent in detention for violating a curfew and failing to provide valid residency papers.
That July, then-President Mohamed Morsi was ousted and declared the Muslim Brotherhood movement that supported him illegal, sparking mass protests. Lang lived and worked in Egypt as a French language teacher and translator during turbulent times for the Arab republic.
French President Francois Hollande, who visited Cairo last month, urged Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi to speed up the investigation over Lang’s death.
