BEIJING (Sputnik) — According to the statement, the patient is a 29-year-old female, a resident of China's Shandong Province, who traveled to Venezuela and returned home on May 13. The woman who was admitted to a hospital on Sunday after having developed fever and rash, has been subsequently tested positive for the Zika virus.
The committee believes that the possibility of the virus' spread in Beijing is rather low.
China has already registered over 10 imported Zika cases.
Last week, the World Health Organization said in a new situation report that at least 58 countries had reported Zika virus cases.
Zika is usually spread by the Aedes mosquito, which is common in tropical areas of the Americas. There is a strong scientific consensus that contracting Zika leads to neurological disorders including Guillain-Barre Syndrome and causes fetal microcephaly, a condition in which infants are born with undersized brains.
