MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Austria has to defend its borders, because Schengen zone lacks necessary protective mechanisms, a spokesperson for the People's Party (OVP) told Sputnik on Wednesday.
“As long as the external borders aren’t protected sufficiently, there is a need for border controls,” Tamara Hausl stated.
Hausl underlined that Austria’s ability to host refugees is limited, as the country had already accepted over 100,000 migrants during the last year and a half.
Austria has tightened border controls and imposed daily limits on the number of asylum seekers allowed to enter the country amid the unprecedented influx of refugees to the country.
According to the European Council’s recommendation released on May 12, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway should extend temporary border controls for a further six months.
