MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) — Venezuela is currently facing "a very difficult situation," and the only way out is a referendum on the president's recall, Uruguay's Minister of Foreign Affairs Rodolfo Nin Novoa said Thursday.
Earlier this month, Venezuela’s opposition submitted to the country’s authorities a petition with the signatures of 1.85 million nationals, almost 10 times more than required, in a bid to hold a referendum to remove President Nicolas Maduro from office.
"It seems to me that Venezuela has the way out of this in its own Constitution. I think the only way they have to get out of this situation is a recall referendum," Nin Novoa was quoted by El Obervador as saying.
Nin Novoa, a former member of Uruguay's opposition National Party, noted that Venezuela would "enter on a very dangerous path," if the referendum is not held.
The opposition’s attempts to oust the Venezuelan leader come amid widespread public discontent with his government and acute economic problems the Bolivarian republic is facing.
