The military-political situation in Russia's southwestern strategic direction has significantly worsened over the past year due to conflicts in the Middle East and increased foreign military presence near Russia's borders, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Thus, Russia has equipped troops in region with modern military equipment, including long-range high-precision weapons, he said.

"In this regard, the district's units have been strengthened, troops have been equipped with modern military equipment, including long-range high-precision weapons."

"Over the past year the military-political situation in the southwestern strategic direction has significantly worsened. First of all, this is related to the situation in the Middle East region, as well as attempts by a number of countries to expand their military presence in the immediate vicinity of our borders. We are forced to take appropriate retaliatory measures," Shoigu said.
