MOSCOW (Sputnik) The United States supports possible negotiations between the Taliban and official Afghan authorities, but doubts that such talks will commence any time soon, US President Barack Obama said Thursday.

“My hope, although not my expectation, is that there comes a point at which the Taliban recognizes that they are not going to simply be able to overrun the country and what they need to be doing is to enter into serious reconciliation talks that are led by Afghans and I think if that happens, that’s something that the United States and others in the world community would support. But I am doubtful that that will be happening any time soon and we’ll have to wait and see how those things develop,” Obama said during a press conference in Shima City in Japan.
