BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — On March 27, US presidential candidate Donald Trump called the alliance an outdated organization for which the United States was paying too much. In his other statements Trump promised to revise relations with NATO allies.
"The strength in NATO is that one of our core values is that we are an open democratic society and in an open democratic societies there are different opinions and different views and we agree and we disagree, that is part of democratic society… despite all that we are able to reach consensus and implement our decisions," Stoltenberg said during a press conference when commenting on Trump's remarks.
The secretary general also expressed confidence that the alliance would be able to reach consensus when dealing with issues and implement its decisions even after the US presidential election in fall.
He added that stability and peace in Europe were also important for the United States.
