FALLUJAH (Sputnik) — Earlier on Wednesday, Iraqi troops took control over the Shuhada-2 in Fallujah. The Nuaimiya neighborhood in the south of the city has also been liberated.
"Operations began in the central part of Fallujah. The offensive is being carried out in accordance with the Joint Special Operations Command plan," Yahya Rasul Zubaidi said.
The Iraqi army and militias, backed by US airstrikes, launched the offensive to retake Fallujah on May 22. The city has been under the control of Daesh militant group since 2014. The group is outlawed in Russia and the United States.
