MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UNGA presidency rotates annually between five geographic areas. It is the turn of an Asian representative to head Assembly meetings, after Denmark’s Mogens Lykketoft steps down.
The voting will take place at UN Headquarters in New York, which will also host the Assembly’s next big opening meeting followed by a general debate on September 13-26. The session will run from September 2016 to September 2017.
In that timespan, the new president will be tasked with organizing the work of the UN General Assembly – the UN’s only body that gives equal representation to all its 192 member states – including setting its priorities and goals.
