Pakistan Seeks US Support for Nuclear Suppliers Group Membership Bid
Prime Minister Modi called Russian President Putin and wished him good will on the National Day and also sought his support for India's bid in the NSG.

"The leaders confirmed their intention to continue comprehensive deepening of bilateral relations, which have the character of a very privileged strategic partnership. The discussion focused on practical issues of the two countries' cooperation, including preparations for the top level contacts to be held shortly," a statement from the Kremlin said.

Russia has been supportive of India's membership in the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group.

India wants more pro-active support from Russian President Putin so as to influence China and Kazakhstan as these countries are still not supportive of India's bid for NSG membership.

Putin, Modi Discuss Strengthening of Bilateral Cooperation
"Russian President Putin can influence and impress both China and Kazakhstan so that they can support India's NSG bid. Russia has good relations with China. Although India is getting closer to Russia but Russia is still our prime strategic partner," former ambassador Yogendra Kumar told Sputnik.

China has been insisting on the NPT as a criterion for NSG membership.
Prime Minister Modi will meet with Russian President and Chinese President Xi on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tashkent on June 23, just before the NSG plenary in Seoul.
