French Police Prevent Clashes Between English, Russian Fans in Lille

French municipal police prevented clhess between Russian and British nationals in Lille after a Russia-Slovakia match, Michel Lalande, the prefect of Nord-Pas-de-Calais Picardie region, said Thursday in a statement.

PARIS (Sputnik) — According to media reports, after the Slovakian national football team defeated Russians 2-1 on Wednesday, allegedly drunken UK fans, who came to Lille for an England-Wales match scheduled for June 16 in the nearby town of Lens shouted insults at Russian fans provoking a series in incidents.

"Measures have been taken to avoid clashes between the British and the Russian nationals. Virtually no scuffles occurred between them," Lalande's statement reads.

Lalande added that French police used tear gas to disperse fans and detained 37 people, with 22 of them released later.

"There has been no direct confrontation between police and the fans," Lalande said.

On June 11, the Russian national football team played against England in its first UEFA Euro 2016 football match in the French city of Marseille. After the game, clashes between Russian and English fans erupted at the stadium and in the port city. As a result, at least 30 people were injured.
