MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura's representatives met with members of the Cairo-formed Syrian opposition group to discuss the country's political transition, Cairo group member Firas Khalidi said.
"The meeting took place between noon and six in the evening. De Mistura's representatives did not make any proposals, they wanted to listen to our opinions on the transitional process and its mechanisms," Khalidi told Sputnik on Saturday.
"The visit of de Mistura's representatives and their meeting with the Cairo group took place amid a tour that also saw them visit Moscow, Riyadh and Tehran in order to study the wide range of opinions that exists with regard to Syrian settlement," Khalidi added.
On Friday, de Mistura’s representatives held talks with the Moscow-formed Syrian opposition group. On Thursday, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that the representatives are expected to travel to Damascus, Moscow, Riyadh and Cairo to hold technical talks with Syrian opposition members.
The latest round of intra-Syrian talks took place in Geneva on April 13-27. The Moscow-Cairo group, particularly its Moscow platform led by Qadri Jamil, proposed the idea of appointing several deputies for Syrian President Bashar Assad, and delegating his full powers to them.
