MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
"I think I see a big parallel. I think people really see a big parallel, a lot of people I've talked about that and not only in the United States, but [in] other countries. People want to take their country back and they wanna have independence," Trump said answering to a question on the results of the Brexit referendum.
He added that people also wanted to have control over their state's borders and monetary policy.
The United Kingdom and the United States will remain great allies despite the decision by the UK citizens to leave the bloc, Trump said.
"There is gonna be a great relationship, that the great allies always happen and I think zero will change… There has never been a better ally."
"I think David Cameron is a good man… he didn't get the mood of his country right. He was surprised, he was very surprised to see what has happened, but he is a good man and felt that way and probably did the right thing."
Former London Mayor and Brexit supporter Boris Johnson “got it right” regarding the Brexit referendum and has an advantage in the upcoming snap elections in the country, US Presidential Candidate Donald Trump said Friday.
"He got it right, so that gives him an advantage, but I don’t know," Trump said, answering a question on Boris Johnson’s possibility of becoming the next UK prime minister as David Cameron has announced his resignation following Britons’ decision to leave the European Union.
Former London Mayor Boris Johnson has been one of the key supporters of the Leave campaign. He stressed that the referendum outcome was more important for him than his political career.
