Kurt Sonnenfeld, who was 39 at the time, was sent by FEMA into the wreckage, tasked with recording everything he saw on video. He never gave the agency the files he recorded, however, stating that he believed that the Bush Administration was either aware of the impending attack or, more sinisterly, a party to it.
“What indeed is finally beautiful except death and love. Kurt, please get help,” the note read, with the word “love” crossed out, news.co.au reports.
Sonnenfeld’s wife’s fingerprints were found on the weapon, but the photographer’s story was not believed by authorities — and what’s worse, it kept changing. He was charged with murder and set to appear in court the following June, but soon after the charges were dropped. Two men briefly imprisoned with Sonnenfeld asserted that he confessed the murder to them while they were jailed together.
Sonnenfeld subsequently fled to Argentina, and was gone by the time a judge signed a new warrant for his arrest in 2003. He has now remarried and has two children.
While there is evidence pointing to Sonnenfeld being behind his wife’s death, he has asserted that it is part of a plot against him, relating to his discovery of an empty vault in World Trade Center 6. Sonnenfield believes the vault was emptied in anticipation of the attack.
“One thing I’m certain of is that agencies of intelligence of the United States of America knew what was going to happen and at least let it happen,” he said, in a documentary titled Kurt Sonnenfeld: Man Behind the Camera.
“Not only did they know it was going to happen, but they in fact collaborated.”
“To me, the most suspicious thing of all is what happened to building seven at the World Trade Center,” he said. “This building was not hit by a plane. It didn’t have any structural damage… but, amazingly enough, building seven fell in a perfect textbook type implosion, taking only 6.5 seconds for a 47-story building to fall completely into its own footprint.”
“This to me indicates there was absolutely no resistance between the floors when the building collapsed.”
The US has unsuccessfully attempted to extradite him, and Sonnenfeld maintains that he has no intention of returning.
