India, UK to Hold Talks on New Trade Deal in Light of Brexit

India and the United Kingdom are set to agree on new terms of bilateral trade in the light of the recent referendum on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the Indian Trade Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The statement comes after on Friday, during his visit to India, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Sajid Javid held talks with Indian Minister of Trade and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman.

"The trade minister said that we are pleased to enter negotiations with the United Kingdom on trade in goods, services and investments," the statement said.

New Delhi also reportedly invited the main negotiator from the United Kingdom to enter talks with India’s main negotiator in order to lend momentum to the process.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

On Thursday, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne met with the Chinese delegation in London as the United Kingdom now has to establish new trade deals replacing the EU agreements.
