BERLIN (Sputnik) — The exact number of injured and detained activists is yet to be announced, a spokesperson told RIA Novosti.
On Saturday's evening, up to 2,000 activists staged a protest against eviction of a so-called alternative residential project on Rigaer Strasse 94, which in Berlin usually means squatting.
The demonstration which began peacefully turned violent when extremists among the protesters started throwing stones, bottles and fires into police, breaking windows in nearby houses and damaging police cars.
Berliner Morgenpost newspaper reported that police numbers reached 1,800 and it used tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the violent protesters.
