"First, the need for strong, proven leadership to steer us through what will be difficult and uncertain economic and political times, the need, of course, to negotiate the best deal for Britain in leaving the EU, and to forge a new role for ourselves in the world. Second, we are going to unite our country and, third, we need a strong, new positive vision for the future of our country," May said in a statement.
She vowed to give the country’s people control over their lives and to "build a better Britain."
Outgoing UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced his resignation after his campaign to keep the United Kingdom a member of the European Union lost 52-48 percent in a June 23 referendum. Earlier on Monday, May became the only candidate to head the UK Conservative Party and to become the country’s new prime minister after her rival Andrea Leadsom withdrew her candidacy.
Cameron is expected to resign Wednesday, July 13.
