MOSCOW (Sputnik) – UK Home Secretary Theresa May was confirmed Monday as the new leader of the Conservative Party, Graham Brady, the Chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory lawmakers, said.
Earlier in the day, outgoing UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday he would officially step down on Wednesday, July 13.
"I have received confirmation from the board of the party and can now declare that Mrs May has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative party with immediate effect," Brady said speaking to Tory lawmakers.
