According to Maia, one of the main priorities on the country's agenda is to stabilize the economic situation and carry out necessary reforms.
"We will have to discuss and adopt reforms related to the government spending, which has long exceeded all possible limits in Brazil. The citizens and companies can no longer support an increase in taxes and the creation of new taxes, they are themselves in debt," Maia told Sputnik.
"The task of the Parliament — jointly with the government — is to carry out a reform that would actually change the government. Because in its current form the government with its growing budget deficit and high interest rates negatively affects the lives of thousands of people — they are suffering from rising unemployment and business closures," the politician added.
Commenting on the question of what projects he considers most important, the politician named the mining industry as well as the project aimed at the resolution of the situation with the debts of the federal states.
"States are in a very difficult financial situation, they should be given a break, an opportunity to delay the repayment of debts. All three branches of government must unite to overcome this crisis as soon as possible," the politician stated.
Replying to another important question concerning the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, Maia said:
"I think she will finally be removed from power. But it is just my personal opinion, I am not a senator," the politician stated.
Rousseff has been suspended from office for 180 days, pending trial. Vice President Michel Temer is assuming presidency during that period.
