Tsipras, Erdogan Discuss Fate of Alleged Coup Supporters Arriving to Greece
09:10 GMT 17.07.2016 (Updated: 09:28 GMT 17.07.2016) Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras held a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the fate of eight alleged military coup supporters, who asked for a political asylum in Greece, Athens News Agency reported Sunday, citing a source.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, a Turkish Black Hawk helicopter with eight crew members landed in Alexandroupolis following the coup attempt in Turkey. Later, the helicopter was returned to Turkish side by Greek authorities.
According to the source, Tsipras noted that procedure of
consideration of asylum seekers' applications would be short, but held in accordance with international law and agreements on human rights.
The source stressed that Erdogan expressed appreciation for Greek government's position on the military coup attempt in Turkey.
Late on Friday, Turkish authorities said that an attempted coup took place in the country. The coup was suppressed several hours later. Over 260 people were killed and hundreds were injured during the events, while nearly 3,000 people have already been detained.
