VIENNA (Sputnik) — On July 14, a truck rammed into a large crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the city of Nice. At least 84 people, including children, were killed and hundreds of others were injured. The French investigation found that the person behind the attack was 31-year-old resident of Nice of Tunisian origin Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel.
According to the French government, Bouhlel was rapidly radicalized by the Daesh extremist group prior to the attack.
"In the current situation, I believe that we have done well so far, but now a new phase has started and it is necessary to develop a strategy for deradicalization," Kern told OE1 radio station.
Kern's remark was made against the backdrop of the recent attack by a self-radicalized Islamist in the French resort city of Nice.
"I think that now is the right time to decide how we want to organize coexistence in our country for the future. I will discuss that with the representatives of Islamic associations. I will invite them this week to discuss how we can come to a calm and reasonable dialogue," the Chancellor added.
