MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The outbreak of Zika virus in Colombia, which started in the country 10 months ago, is over, the country's health ministry said on Monday.
"The Health Ministry declares the end to the Zika outbreak that started in Colombia in September 2015," the ministry said in its Twitter account.
According to the ministry, nearly 100,000 Zika cases were registered in Colombia during the period.
The current Zika outbreak originated in Brazil in the spring of 2015, spread across Latin America and gained much media attention as confirmations of first cases emerged in Europe and the United States.
The Zika virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito and is almost innocuous to adults but can be dangerous for pregnant women as their babies may be born with neurological disorders, including microcephaly.
