Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday firmly dismissed allegations of Russia's involvement in the Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails hack.

VIENTIANE (Sputnik) — On Friday, the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks published nearly 20,000 emails from the DNC. The campaign of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said Russian hackers could be behind the leak.

"I wouldn't like to use profanity," Lavrov told reporters asked whether Russia was behind the alleged hacking.

The hacked emails revealed misconduct by DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and other top DNC members who worked to obstruct Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ campaign to boost Clinton’s chances of becoming the party’s presidential nominee.

In light of the scandal, Schultz said on Sunday she would resign after the July 25-28 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

According to media reports, US federal investigators attempted to warn the DNC about a potential cyberthreat several months before efforts were made to tackle the issue.
