A final decision on the participation of Russian four-time world champion swimmer Yulia Efimova in the Rio Olympics is expected on Friday, Russian national swimming team head coach Sergei Kolmogorov said.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) – At the end of last month, Efimova filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over her doping-related ban on participating in the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

"We are awaiting a final decision on Yulia on Friday, her case has to be considered by the IOC [International Olympic Committee] panel," Kolmogorov told R-Sport in a phone interview.

Rome Hosts Rally in Support of Russian Athletes Banned From Rio Olympics

On Thursday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld the appeal of Russian rowers Karabelshikova and Podshivalov ruling that the ban of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the participation of Russian athletes with previous doping violations in the Rio Games is unenforceable.

Russian Swimming Federation President Vladimir Salnikov told R-Sport that in view of the ruling, the decision on Efimova’s participation in Rio Games is now up to the IOC three-member panel alone.

CAS Dismisses Appeal by Russian Rowers
In July, the Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) prohibited all Russian athletes from taking part in international competitions, including the upcoming Rio Olympics, over doping allegations.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) later made a decision not to ban the entire Russian Olympic team from participating in the Rio Olympics, choosing to leave it to individual sports federations to decide on athletes' participation.

The IOC Review Panel was tasked with reviewing the international federations’ decisions in relation to the entry of each individual athlete.
