Thailand’s draft constitution has been approved in a referendum, but the result has been criticized over the banning of dissenting voices; Italy looks set to hold a crucial vote in the autumn which could herald major reforms in the country and treatment of refugees in Australian detention centres.

Today’s main stories: A majority of voters have backed Thailand's draft constitution, which the ruling military junta claims will bring stability to the country. But critics say the vote wasn't fair, and that it will only further entrench military control. We speak to the journalist Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Italy's highest court is expected today to give the go ahead for a national referendum to take place in the autumn which could see major reforms to the country’s constitution and electoral system. But what exactly will Italian voters be voting on? We talk with Professor James Newell, co-founder of the UK Political Studies Association’s Italian Politics Specialist Group.
