MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Berdnik’s daughter Irina Bessmertnaya confirmed to Sputnik that the Ukrainian Security Service (SSU) had detained her mother following searches at her home. The SSU has so far denied the claims of Berdnik’s detainment.
"We will send Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudswoman Lutkovska a request to check this information and, in the case Miroslava Berdnik is indeed in detention, to check the validity of the detention and the charges," Brod, of the Moscow Bureau for Human Rights, told RIA Novosti.
"And we should involve the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks, for them [Muiznieks and Lutkovska] to carry out an evaluation of constant harassment against unwanted publicists, journalists and writers [in Ukraine]," Brod added.
Berdnik, who is also a writer and a blogger, is a well-known critic of the situation that has unraveled in Ukraine since the 2014 Maidan protests. She is also a stark opponent of Ukrainian nationalism.
