KIEV (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, Yanukovych's lawyer Vitaliy Serdyuk said that the former Ukrainian president addressed the General Prosecutor's Office with such a request in order to ensure objectivity, completeness of the interrogation, the complete clarity of the circumstances and to avoid contradictions in the testimony.
According to the Ukrainian ZN.UA newspaper, citing their sources in the Prosecutor General's office, Yanukovych's request has been rejected because one must first give an initial testimony in order for a simultaneous interrogation to be carried out, and Yanukovych has not yet given any testimony.
Mass protests erupted in Ukraine after Yanukovych refused to sign an association agreement with the European Union. The government of Yanukovych was toppled after months of protests in Kiev's landmark Maidan square in February 2014.
During the clashes between the security forces and the protesters more than a hundred people died. New Ukrainian authorities headed by the President Poroshenko put the blame on Yanukovych.
