Turkey has been slipping away from the US’ unipolar grasp ever since the failed coup attempt against President Erdogan last month, and the country has been moving towards Russia and Iran as a result. Ankara made it clear that the normalization of ties with Washington is conditional on it handing over Fethullah Gulen, the shadowy Pennsylvania-based cleric who Erdogan blames for orchestrating the regime change attempt.
Despite showing no sign of wanting to extradite him, the US might be able to bring new steam to its relations with Turkey through its support for Ankara’s operation in northern Syria.
