WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Monday, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre suspended the hearings after environmental activists stormed the meeting room and disrupted the proceedings.
“Our next Panel Session is scheduled to begin in Quebec City [on] October 3,” Kiley said on Tuesday.
NEB considers the delay necessary because of the organization’s concerns over the safety of participants and quality of the discussion process, Kiley added.
“Our goal was to provide an opportunity for intervenors to ask questions about the Energy East application and share what matters most to them in a respectful, courteous and safe environment.”
The 4,600-kilometer (2,858-mile) long Energy East would be the largest tar sands underground line ever built in North America, reaching from Alberta to New Brunswick.
In April, an environmental advocacy group reported that the pipeline would cross nearly 3,000 identified waterways and other critical water sources and endanger the drinking water of 5 million Canadians living in four provinces.
