The US government awarded $10 million to organizations in 21 states that provide citizenship preparation assistance and legal services to lawful permanent residents, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said in a press release on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The release explained that a large portion of the grants will be distributed in metropolitan areas such as New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and Miami that have registered the highest number of new permanent residents in the past ten years.

The agency will also focus on citizenship education programs at "eligible community-based organizations," such as local colleges and libraries, that do not provide legal services.

USCIS estimated that approximately 25,000 permanent residents will receive citizenship preparation services as a result of the grant awards.

According to US Department of Homeland Security, over one million immigrants who received "green cards" in 2014 reside primarily in the states of California, Florida, New Jersey, New York and Texas.
