"We draw your attention to the Sudanese government’s continuing abuses against civilians in South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur, including unlawful attacks on villages and indiscriminate bombing of civilians. We are also concerned about the continuing repression of civil and political rights, in particular the ongoing crackdown on protesters and abuse of independent civil society and human rights defenders," the letter issued on the Human Rights Watch (HRW) website in advance of the 33rd UNHRC session said.
The Sudanese authorities are also reportedly violating basic rights of women.
The letter asked the UNHRC to condemn the grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur; urge the Sudanese government to ensure access for humanitarian organizations to affected areas and to implement specific measures aimed at improving the situation; as well as mandate a Special Rapporteur to monitor and report on ongoing human rights violations in the country.
