Today marks the 45th anniversary of the beginning of the Attica prison uprising in which over 1,000 prisoners took control of the facility in New York, demanding political rights and improved conditions. The lessons of this rebellion continue to be relevant today. Becker talks with Dr. Anthony Monteiro about the importance of what took place at Attica in 1971 and how the crushing of the uprising ushered in a new era of right-wing attacks on the progressive movement.
Even kids aren’t safe from the mass incarceration machine in the United States – and this is especially true for children from poor families. A recently-released report found that kids are being locked up because their parents are unable to pay court fees and fines that are imposed on them by the juvenile “justice system”.
