TOKYO (Sputnik) — The Kyodo news agency said the leaders held a prompt phone call overnight and agreed that more steps were needed to address North Korea’s nuclear ambition, including new sanctions.
An unnamed Japanese official reportedly cited the US president who said Washington was committed to Japan’s security, and the two allies would work together to address the threat posed by Pyongyang.
The United Nations has banned North Korea from developing nuclear and ballistic missile technologies and imposed fresh sanctions on it after the fourth nuclear test in January.
A fifth test, the strongest ever experiment, is believed to have been carried out by North Korea at its northeastern nuclear test site overnight. It was registered by monitoring services as a moderate earthquake.
