North Korea has confirmed on central television the seismic event on Friday morning to be the new nuclear test, Yonhap agency reports. During the broadcast Pyongyang also announced that it is capable of equipping missiles with nuclear warheads. The government also said on Friday that it was set on continuing with its nuclear program, the Yonhap news agency said.
Earlier on Friday, the South Korean military said that North Korea could have carried out its fifth and "biggest-ever" nuclear test, on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the foundation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The declaration came after several seismological services, including the US Geological Survey, reported a ground-level seismic event on Friday morning northeast of the town of Sungjibaegam, near the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Korea.
