EU Parliament Urges Poland to Solve Constitutional Crisis Before End of October

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — European Parliament calls on Polish government to solve the constitutional crisis within the three months deadline set on July 27, an EU Parliament press release said Wednesday.

"They [Members of European Parliament] urge Polish authorities to cooperate with the Commission, which issued a Rule of law Opinion in June and a Recommendation to Poland in July, and call on the Commission to monitor the follow-up to these recommendations by the Polish authorities," the press release said.

The statement reiterated EU Parliament's concern over the paralysis of the Constitutional Tribunal and reminded Polish government of the principles that govern the European Union and which Poland, as a member state, had agreed to adopt.

The press release also emphasized the need to review other recent laws which might put constraints on right of freedom of expression, independence of public media, right to a fair trial and others.

In 2015, the Polish government adopted a number of controversial laws on police, media and court including one that might influence the independence of the Constitutional Tribunal Judges. The Constitutional Tribunal ruled on the new legislation as unconstitutional, which Polish Government did not publish to avoid legitimizing the ruling.

The European Parliament passed its first resolution on the situation in Poland in April. In July, the second resolution gave Poland three months to review the new laws.
