"The filing to the Swedish government is an important milestone for the Nord Stream 2 project. It sets off the project’s various national application processes," Nord Stream 2 CEO Matthias Warnig said.
The nearly 320-mile route is said to stretch outside Swedish national territory along the continental shelf and run "broadly parallel" to existing Nord Stream pipelines.
The application filed with Sweden's Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation includes atlases, a technical description and an environmental study (IEA), the company said.
The Nord Stream 2 project aims to deliver up to 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia to Germany annually via the Baltic Sea. Gazprom has a shareholder agreement to extend the existing Nord Stream with the European energy firms.
