The Iraqi Armed Forces launched an offensive to liberate Shirqat, a town occupied by Daesh and located to the south of Mosul, as well as two other areas, Prime Minister Haider Abadi said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, Abadi and US President Barack Obama held a meeting in New York, where they had discussed a number of issues, including the anti-Daesh campaign and the operation to liberate the Daesh stronghold of Mosul.

Shirqat is the settlement located near the road from Baghdad to Mosul, while Jazirat Ramadi and Jazirat Heet are located along the Euphrates River in the province of Anbar, which also lies south of the Daesh-controlled city.

Mosul, which is one of the largest Iraqi cities, as well as a number of other northern and western Iraqi settlements were seized in 2014 during an offensive of Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia and the United States among other nations.
