MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Crowds of refugees tried to storm the ring road leading to the French port near the Channel Tunnel but were repelled by police who used tear gas, the Ouest-France daily said.
The scuffles broke out not far away from a wall that is being built with British government’s money to fence off a part of the road in order to stop migrants from jumping UK-bound trucks.
According to the outlet, refugees have been setting up barricades on the road at night to slow down trucks and stow away on them. Several people, including teenagers, have lost their lives in road accidents.
French presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy visited the port city shortly before the clashes, the iTELE television channel said. He reportedly pledged to revise a 2003 law that allowed Britain to shift border controls to the French soil.
