The main Turkish opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) appealed to the Constitutional Court with a demand to cancel a number of provisions in the Ordinance of the emergency decree, which was introduced in force parallel with the state of emergency in Turkey.

“All our actions are determined by the desire to form a management system in Turkey, corresponding to the concept of the rule of law. That is why we opposed the introduction of the state of emergency in the country,” Gök said.

According to the chairman the government announced a state of emergency in order to be able to issue emergency decrees and demand their fulfillment.

He further said that his party is convinced that the government's emergency decrees violate the country's constitutional provisions as well as the fact that the coup attempt was a direct violation of the law.

“Republican constitutional norms are the same for everyone,” Gök said.

He further said that, “The authorities cannot act arbitrarily, in accordance with their wishes and preferences.”

When a coup was attempted, all of the parties represented in the parliament, including the CHP, united to overcome consequences of that failed attempt, the chairman said.

“However, the country's leadership will not be able to impose a new order in the state, taking advantage of the state of emergency by issuing illegal emergency decrees.”

According to the chairman, this matter should be discussed and approved solely within the parliament sessions.
